I couldn't sleep last night and decided to leave the house at 3:00AM to wait until the sun came up. As I left, a homeless man came up to me as I was sitting beside my car and asked if I had any weed on me. All I had was a small roach that I let him have. I gave him a couple smokes too.
He sat down and asked me whats up. I didn't really tell him much, just that I couldn't sleep and needed to leave the house. But as he kept talking I grew comfortable and we ended up sitting there a good 30 minutes just talking about ourselves. Where we come from, our faith, our problems, our hopes, my hate of drugs and his indifference. He was a cool dude. 34 years old, talked at a very quiet volume. It was hard to understand him as I sat a good distance from him, but I understood the gist of what he was saying. He's always on the move, from city to city, just trying to do what he can to get high and not die. He told me that sometimes he would go to jail on purpose just to have somewhere to stay. The problem with jail is that it is boring. You sit in a cell all by yourself doing nothing. At low security prisons, there are a few priveleges you get. Sometimes they let you have a game console in there, or a phone that they monitor, but in his case he just sat, read, worked out and prayed. Boring, but easy shelter and keeps you from the drugs. He was very erudite for a homeless dude. If he wasn't a junkie, he could probably hold down a pretty good life for himself. But alas, being a drug addict is a sentence. He rocked from side to side as he sat still for a long period of time.
Eventually I offered to buy him some weed as I only had a small roach on me that I was saving for myself, and I was going to buy more anyways. 4 grams worth of pre-rolls for 10 bucks. Usually it's 10 bucks per gram for any decent strain, but I am not someone who cares and just sees all weed as identical. I gave him two and kept two, then went over to McDonalds to get him some breakfast. I learned he was a Muslim converted from Catholic parents, so I got him a bagel n' egg BLT without the bacon. He said just a "veggie burger" will be fine, but the man needed protein so I suggested the bagel with an egg in it. He did not want the bacon but he was perfectly fine smoking weed and cigarettes.
I drove him back to my parking spot and we sat there smoking one of my joints. He wanted to know what kind of music I listened to so I just showed him Boards of Canada, Tommy Guerrero, and some old Kanye West. He seemed to fuck with it, especially so because he passed out in my car. Homeless people don't exactly smell good, and weed doesn't smell good either. I tried to open both front windows but he said it was too cold so he closed his side. Guy thought he was in a luxury suite. Seat warmer, Kanye West, while stoned asf drinking a large Coke. I felt bad and didn't want to disturb him as it is very rare to be comfortable when you're homeless and aint got shit. I let it go on for a while until I came to the realization that I was letting a homeless person sleep in my car. All of the sudden I became disgusted and ashamed. I started watching him to make sure he wasn't stealing anything. His muscles were twitching as he laid there like he was dead. I hated what I was seeing.
I then woke him up and told him that this wasn't my car and I had to go back upstairs. Right as I said that I felt as if I returned back to baseline and felt extremely guilty. I gave him some cash for the road, took the garbage and opened the door to let him chill in the stairwells. He said he would wait for me, but since I was holding his garbage I told him I was just gonna go throw this out, then take the elevator. Then we parted ways.
For the next hour and a half I stood by my window watching my car in the parking lot. Eventually seeing him walk past by. He looked at my car from a fair distance, and walked away. I stayed for another 30 minutes until I stopped thinking about it.
